In the realm of nursing, empowerment holds the key to transformation. It is the spark that ignites the flames of confidence, knowledge, and compassion within each caregiver. Nurses embrace the responsibility to empower the ones they serve, providing them with the tools and support to take control of their own well-being.
However, equally important is the empowerment of nurses themselves as healthcare professionals. Through continuous learning, advocacy, and embracing their unique strengths, they unlock their full potential, transcending boundaries and redefining the limits of what is possible.
In this journey of empowerment, nurses discover the immense impact they can have, not only on the lives of those entrusted to their care, but also on the future of healthcare itself. This is the story of two nurses doing just that at St. Paul’s PACE; Therese Cabigas and Sara Franco.
Therese and Sara have been clinic registered nurses at St. Paul’s PACE Chula Vista for several years, but they knew they needed to expand their knowledge and skills to better serve their participants.
They had noticed an increasing number of participants with chronic wounds, and they were determined to provide the best care possible. Therese and Sara said, “We were seeing a lot of wounds in the clinic, and we wanted to take better care of our PACE participants.”
When they heard about the advanced wound care training program at St. Paul’s Senior Services, they knew they had to attend. The four-day course was intense, but they were excited to learn about new treatments, products, and techniques for wound care. They were amazed by the amount of information they were absorbing and eager to apply it in their practice.
At the end of the program, they were both nervous about taking the challenging exam. They had studied hard and felt confident, but they couldn’t help feeling anxious. Sara and Therese said, “We just walked out of the exam shaking our heads and needing a cup of coffee. We were sure we didn’t pass.” When they received the email from their supervisor congratulating them on becoming wound care certified, they were overjoyed. They hugged each other and couldn’t stop smiling.
Their newfound knowledge and skills were quickly put into practice. They started coaching their fellow nurses at St. Paul’s PACE Chula Vista on wound care, demonstrating how to use new products and techniques. The doctors, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) were impressed with their knowledge and delighted to see them using the latest wound care tools.
Therese stated, “Everyone asks us for advice. We demonstrate how to use these tools and care for participants at our Chula Vista clinic. The doctors, NPs, and PAs are happy to see we know how to use all the latest products.”
One PACE participant in particular had been struggling with a stubborn wound that just wouldn’t heal. But with the new treatment plan that the nurses and doctors designed using their knowledge from the course, the wound finally healed. The participant was so grateful and couldn’t stop singing their praises to anyone who would listen.
The wound care and product board that Therese and Sara created is a hit with the St. Paul’s PACE staff. It hangs outside the supply closet, and everyone refers to it often when getting ready to provide wound care. The board shows different wound care products and how to use them. The Chula Vista clinic team responded with enthusiasm, giving it a two thumbs up!
Therese and Sara feel outstanding about sharing their knowledge with their colleagues and improving patient care. They are thrilled to be making a difference in the lives of their PACE participants and knew that their commitment to teaching others would improve the lives of many more.
St. Paul’s PACE is proud of them and grateful for their passion and dedication to improving patient care.
